Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) Jack Smith formally charged former President Donald Trump for his alleged role in seeking to overturn the result of the 2020 election leading to the Jan 6 Capitol attack.
This is the first time in the history of America that a former president has ever been indicted on criminal charges, which means that no court has been given the opportunity to rule on the topic. Trump faces four counts of charges: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction or an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights. This latest round of charges is the third indictment against the former POTUS.
Smith, who had been investigating Trump and ultimately charged him, gave a brief statement to reporters after the charges had been made public. He said the DOJ is “committed to ensuring accountability for those criminally responsible for what happened” on Jan. 6, which he described as “an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.” He promised that his office will seek a “speedy trial” for the president. Trump isn’t the only one facing charges in this case, according to Katie Couric Media. The indictment lists six co-conspirators who haven’t yet been named, though they’re identified as four lawyers, a DOJ official, and a political consultant, all of whom allegedly either spread false claims of election fraud or assisted in strategizing about how to obstruct the certification of President Joe Biden’s win in 2020.
To critics, this occurrence just proved that the Left-leaning government is capable of criminalizing political dissent. People are now worried that disagreeing with the Democrats could send one to court or even prison. According to investigative journalist Daniel Greenfield of the Front Page Magazine, the 45th president’s previous indictments had broken all sorts of new legal ground by turning misdemeanors into felonies and deciding that the statute of limitations is just a suggestion, but the Jan 6 indictment by Smith criminalizes election challenges or at least election “protests” against the current administration. And along with that, all political dissent.
“This one [third indictment] is designed to intimidate any Republicans who might seek to challenge the outcome of the 2024 presidential election,” Greenfield wrote. “Unsatisfied with indicting the leading GOP primary candidate in order to rig the election, Democrats are criminalizing political opposition before and after the upcoming election.” Kind of like an early warning to not dispute the coming election results that are sure to be rigged and fraudulent.
“When Democrats spread lies about an election, they get book deals and evening slots on MSNBC, and sometimes, like Former Vice President Al Gore, they even get Oscars and Nobel Peace prizes,” the contributing writer also pointed out.
Going back over two centuries to the 1800 presidential election, it has been a traditional practice to challenge the pools.
“Free nations with open elections are not afraid of election challenges and the Democrats have spent a fortune on their own election challenge efforts. The Biden campaign spent $20 million on over sixty post-election lawsuits in 2020,” Greenfield stressed. “Smith won’t be indicting Biden or Marc Elias because he is a longtime Democrat crony.” Instead, the special counsel indicted Trump for such “invented crimes,” he added.
Democrats and the mainstream media contend that the indictment is apolitical. But actually, they are making it seem that Trump is only alleging “baseless fraud claims,” “sham election investigations” and “false claims of election fraud.” All of these are the partisan opinions of the prosecutor rather than the law.
“If Smith’s Jan 6 indictment succeeds, freedom dies and dissent becomes illegal. To disagree with leftists will no longer just lead to a loss of work or arguments on social media, but arrests, trials, and prison sentences,” Greenfield stated.
He shared concerned citizens’ worry that this 3rd indictment will only set up an unprecedented suppression of political opposition. It will not end with Trump or with the 2024 presidential election. “Smith has done nothing less than to take sections of the law and use them to build a criminal infrastructure that can be used to outlaw most political parties and activities on a level with that of Communist China or Russia,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that Trump is set to plead “not guilty” to the charges. He also called for the trial to be moved from heavily Democratic Washington, D.C., to a more Republican-friendly place like West Virginia. “This Indictment is all about Election Interference!!!” said the top 2024 Republican presidential candidate on his Truth Social website.
